Tree Sprouts

How to get rid of them

This is a down to earth garden tip from Martin’s Pet and Garden Center.

Tree sprouts are sprouting by the hundreds in some lawns and thin areas of turf allow plenty of sunshine to reach tree seeds in the ground. The result looks like an attempt to reforest some yards.

Mowing tree sprouts as they grow to mowing height and using an herbicide that contains Tryclolpyr can be sprayed to control them. Hi-Yield’s Tryclopyr Ester mixed with a spreader sticker will control these sprouts along with some hard to kill weeds like clover, ground ivy, chickweed and wild violets.

Mowing lawns too short can actually cause the turf to thin out. It also causes the grass to put its energy into blade production instead of root development. Most lawns should be mowed at a cutting height of 3 inches. Mowing taller also cuts down on weed growth.
