Garter Snakes

Harmless and Helpful!

This is a down to earth garden tip form Martin’s Pet and Garden Center.

It is not uncommon to be startled by a snake in your garden or flower bed this time of year. The most common snake we have in our area is the garter snake, named for the 3 light stripes that run along the length of its body. The Eastern garter snake varies in color from black, brown or gray on an olive background.

If the presence of a garter snake in your garden can be tolerated, they are actually helping you. They eat worms, insects, slugs and small mammals that me be eating your garden plants.

Garter snakes are most active during the day and they play a valuable role in controlling any yard and garden pests. They are just as afraid of you as you are of them.

If you cannot tolerate them, we do have a granular snake repellent product from HI-Yield. For all of your gardening products, stop by Martin’s Pet and Garden Center in downtown Elkhart, where we make YOU the expert.
